In rural India a day does not go by without contact with rice.
Morning and evening the woman of the house draws a "muggu" or rice flour drawing. These intricate designs on the ground made primarily of rice flour are placed at the entrances of most Hindu homes as a way to start the day with good luck.
Muggus are also thought to be a kind of pest control as bugs eat part of the drawing and won't come into the house.
Designs are passed on from mother to daughter. Before drawing the muggu, the ground is wet with water so the drawing will adhere.
