Hang On! The Navajo Rodeos Ride Again

From twilight on Fridays until high noon on Sundays all summer long, you will find a good time at any one of the Navajo Rodeos kicking up dust on the Navajo reservation in Arizona.

The rodeo is magical. Generations of Navajo pile into pick-ups for the long drive across the reservation to partake in the competion and community each rodeo provides. As warm daylight fades, the voices of arena announcers gallop through a night air saturated with the sweet smell of manure and country music. Grandmothers, mothers, couples, and children congregate around the metal railing to watch riders from the all-Indian Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association compete.

Joining them is Aurora photographer Jan Sonnenmair, who captures the action of rodeo and the color and pride of the Navajo people and brings it all to you in this week's PhotoVoyage. Hang on!
