Truly, Madly, Madagascar.
Unique-endangered species, unusual cultural rituals, diverse ecosystems and incredible topography, Madagascar has it all. The fourth largest island in the world, 85 percent of its plant and animal species exist nowhere else. Ancestral worship practices, including ceremonial exhumation, occur regularly. The island's landscape varies dramatically from lush tropical rain forest of Ranomafana to arid desert massifs of Isalo in the southwest and razor-sharp limestone crag forests of Tsingy de Bemaraha in the west. Although Madagascar is not for everyone, for those looking for a little adventure, have a desire to escape hordes of tourists, and wish to be privy to the unusual, it is everything.
Aurora photographer Carl D. Walsh spent several weeks working in Madagascar and shares some of its wonder and mystique in this PhotoVoyage.
