Yamabushi Mineiri

Yamabushi Mineiri, or austerity people going up the mountain, is celebrated by 151 pilgrims on Mt. Haguro.

The yamabushi are members of the Shugendo sect which is a blend of Shinto and Buddhism.

Their hats are called dainichinyorai and are symbolic of the supreme Buddha.

The five story pagota, a national treasure, was built 1,050 years ago and was repaired 380 years ago.
