Bandiagara Escarpment

Drenched in morning light, the Bandiagara Escarpment and the village of Banani at its base is home to the Dogon.

Nearly 600 years ago, the Dogon settled on the plateau and the scree slope below the cliffs. They farmed the arid land for survival.

The Tellem, who inhabited the region before the Dogon, carved out their world on the cliff's face.

Little is known about the Tellem, but it is believed that they used the cliff as refuge from Arab slave traders who raided the area periodically.
