Watering the Garden
A Dogon man waters
onion gardens in the village of Sangha.
The garden is fertilized
with pigeon guano that is gathered from the Bandiagara cliffs.
Introduced by the French
in the 1930s, onions are the Dogon's only cash crop.
The onions are dried
into balls and shipped to the Ivory Coast to be sold as an ingredient for sauces.
