Terraced Gardens
Onion gardens are planted
on terraces of poor soil and fertilized with goat manure and pigeon guano.
Introduced by the French
in the 1930s, onions are the Dogon's only cash crop.
The onions are dried
into balls and shipped to the Ivory Coast to be sold as an ingredient for sauces.
